You’re invited to join a discussion of the book The Cross and the Lynching Tree by James H. Cone on Thursday evenings from September 26 through October 17. We’ll meet from 7:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. in the church library.
In this powerful work, theologian Cone explores two of the most emotionally charged symbols in the history of the Black community, the cross and the lynching tree. He outlines the harsh reality of life in the lynching era of American history and draws on insights from Reinhold Niebuhr, Martin Luther King Jr., and the Black literary tradition to reflect on the role of the cross in the theology of the Black church. He concludes that for Black Americans, the image of Jesus, hung on a tree to die, powerfully grounded their faith that God was with them, even in the suffering of the lynching era.
The Cross and the Lynching Tree is available for purchase online in paperback and electronic formats. At our first meeting on September 26, we’ll discuss the Introduction and Chapter 1.
